props // stone wall

prepping for a project

some more sculpting and texturing practice, another 3-4 hours. while i know enough about substance painter to use it for work, i wanted to push myself to make a masonry material that is more than just a tiled brick image with displacement.

once again, i sculpted this in blender with a connected samsung tablet (life-changing workflow). the high-poly mesh, roughly 1.7 million polygons, had its details baked onto a 320-polygon mesh to create a game-ready model (and save some rendering time).

in substance painter, i used a combination of terracotta, asphalt, and a basic fill layer to achieve the masonry look. with some dirt generators (and their inverse versions), i was able to quickly map the asphalt (mortar) and terracotta (brick) to their appropriate areas.

had some difficulties setting up the lights for this render, but it got the point across. these past two models have been studies for a larger model that i am planning, so i really didn’t want to spend more than a few hours on each.
