after posting wip.02 (and playing through more of the oblivion remake), i realized that the modular set could handle a much higher poly resolution and detail. here are some updated screenshots.

the biggest change lies in the bricks; instead of using a tileable texture, i went back in, retopo’d my sculpted bricks, and used them to create actual depth. each brick’s total face count lies between 110 and 200, and they additionally carry their own texture sheets to preserve texile density as much as possible.

the bricks were then arrayed into 3 different arrangements along the blank wall to add better variation; these arrangements were then placed onto the rest of the required wall pieces to create more variance, detail, and options.

some pieces ended up being removed in this rework, either due to redundancy or difficulty in re-adding individual bricks. archways are also temporarily devoid of brickwork until i work up the energy to redo that part.

while most pieces have 3 variants, lesser used/smaller pieces, such as the corners and doorways, get away very easily with only 1 or 2.

the brick rework allowed me to revisit how pieces are put together as well. in order to better maintain the 400×300 unit of each wall, the edge bricks are cut in half; instead of moving to the mortar edge, pieces now connect at that brick half to create a more seamless bridge, an issue that was taking a significant amount of time to solve in wip.02

everything is significantly higher fidelity now; textures have been bumped up to 4k (because why not), and the models themselves have more proper and evenly dispersed topology. i am also allowing more textures to be used, as texile density was also becoming an issue during wip.02. wall bricks and column bricks, for example, are split into 2 respective materials, and i added a separate mortar material for what lies behind the bricks.

i don’t mind reworking things; these reworks have taught me a lot, and even though i’m no longer using the tileable brick texture, i’m glad that I went through that exercise in case i need to use something like that in future projects.

with the exterior pieces finally done, and a much more established style and workflow, i am finally working on my floors and interior pieces. i now have a list of what smaller models are needed, so i am very excited to get the architecture done and move on to furniture and foliage.
